April 1
Meeting
|
The speaker for the April 1 meeting was Bonnie
Hagerman who is the
Executive Director, Academic Services at Hood
College. She told us a very moving and
exciting story which began when she saw an
article about people knitting and crocheting
articles of apparel for premature babies.
She was at a point in life where she had some
time on her hands and when she read the article
she said to herself, "I could do that!".
So she got patterns from the hospital for normal
sized infants and scaled them down and submitted
them to Children's Hospital in Washington, D. C.
The verdict: make them smaller! Undaunted,
she scaled down. After a few iterations of
scaling down she was told to "make the bonnet so
that it will fit a lime!". She did and her
items were accepted.
She told the hospital she could do one a day -
about 30 a month. "Would that be enough?"
The answer: "We need up to 125 per month".
She knew she could not meet that goal herself,
but maybe there were others like herself who
would be interested in doing this. By this
time she was more than excited because the
nurses expressed how much these items were
appreciated by both the hospital staff and the
parents.
She went to the Frederick News-Post and asked if
they could print an article about the need for
preemie clothing. They did and she got 150
responses from people who wanted to pitch in.
|
|
She was on her way! When additional help
was needed she went to the Washington Post.
They printed a very small 7 line add in
the far back of the paper; she was disappointed
in this. But - she got 700 responses!
By
now her part time project had grown into a
national effort. The Family Circle
Magazine offered to publish an article and this
time there were 7000 responses from people
interested in participating.
The result of all this was "Carewear".
It's still a volunteer organization and is now
international. Visit their website
www.carewear.org and learn more about
Bonnie's dream come true. Maybe you can
help too!

March 18 meeting
highlights ~

Lions Jim Ensor and Sue Ensor were responsible
for a very interesting program. Lions Ted
and Ann Nettles of the 4 County Lions Club and
members of the Patriot Guard Riders, gave us an
insight of the mission of this group. Lion
Ted is coordinator for the state of Maryland.
The Patriot Guard Riders are a diverse group
of motor cycle riders from across the nation.
They have one thing in common besides
motorcycles which is an unwavering respect for
those who risk their lives for America's freedom
and security. Their primary mission is to
attend the funeral services of fallen American
heroes. Each mission has two basic
objectives, (1) to show their sincere respect
for our nation's fallen heroes, their
families and their communities and (2) to shield
the mourning family and their friends from the
interruptions created by any protestor or group
of protestors. A major activity is to
visit the Walter Reed Hospital to shake their
hand, give words of appreciation or take them
hunting or fishing or whatever they may want to
do. To learn more, visit their website:

$2,300 check
presented to Liberty Elementary
|
For over 35 years it has been the custom for
the Club to present a Benefit Breakfast for a
special need in our community. This year
it was held on March 2; all proceeds were
dedicated to our children at the Liberty
Elementary School who are in real need for
upgraded and new playground equipment.
The county and state school system budget
planning indicates this need will be addressed
no sooner than 2011. This was
recognized as unacceptable by local teachers and
parents, so a fund was established
(Libertytown Playgrounds Fund) to
alleviate the problem as soon as possible.
On
March 6 a check for $2,300 was presented by the
club at Liberty Elementary School.

Wave of the Future -
Traveling in 3 dimensions!
|
Program Chairman, Harry Swope, provided a very
interesting speaker at the meeting of February
19. He was Mr. Robert Garver, an
aeronautical engineer and a specialist in
personal flight craft. He is active in the
Frederick Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft
Association, and has produced numerous
proprietary aircraft designs. In 1988 Bob
started thinking about airplanes for general
transportation to alleviate the crowded system
in the two dimensional system of today. By
adding the third dimension, height, he
envisioned a tremendous increase in the amount
of traffic possible. He discussed his
experiences with aircraft design and showed many
pictures of aircraft he has build plus some of
his own design.
He
flies his ultra-light craft (which he built) out
of the Keymar Airpark located on Route 194 just
north of Maryland Route 77. |

Diabetes Awareness
|
|
At our meeting of February 5, we were honored to
have as our guest speaker, Lion Donna Jackman
who is the Diabetes Awareness Committee Chair
for both Multiple District 22 and District
22-W. She has been actively involved with
diabetes for the past 39 years when her daughter
was first diagnosed with the disease.
She told an almost unbelievable story of events
leading up to this diagnosis.
She reported that there had been almost $100,000
donated via the "Kiss-a-Pig" contest held each
year. She also reported that 13 children
were sent to Camp Mary, a summer experience for
diabetics. Costs are not low because of
special requirements such as full time doctors,
nurses and trained assistants to meet the
special needs of these children. She
summed up by saying that there are 46 million
diabetics in the USA and that there are an
additional 20 million who are unaware they have
it.
After her presentation, Lion Donna was honored
with a Certificate of Appreciation presented to
her by Lion President Gary Mullins. |

Mission of Mercy
Vice President Speaks to us |
|
We were privileged to have Linda Ryan, Vice
President of Mission of Mercy (MOM), as guest
speaker at our regular dinner meeting on January
15, 2008. She explained that the mission
of MOM is to restore dignity to the sick, poor,
and homeless by providing free basic healthcare
and "healing through Love."
Her program included a DVD which presented a
very professional summary of activities and
accomplishments of MOM since its inception in
1991. She pointed out that MOM now has 550
volunteers and that many hospitals in the region
offer free lab and x-ray services. They
are truly a portable operation, very much like
an Army MASH unit. Over 70% of those
served have chronic heart conditions.

President Gary Mullins presenting Linda Ryan a
certificate of appreciation. |

Our 2007 Christmas Dinner and Party
|
|
The Club enjoyed celebrating
the Christmas season by having a dinner party at
the Heritage House in Emmitsburg. The

fun, and the 12 Lions and their 7 guests enjoyed
it all and each other. Clockwise from the
right are: Emcee Harry Swope;
entertainment by the Ensor's; Immediate Past
President Mike opens a bottle of wine;
Lion Pat Radany seem happy with her gift; and
Lion Tim exclaims "Look at what I got!!"
Many thanks to Christmas Party

| Lion
Bill Anderman Becomes Life Member |
|
The November 20 meeting was adjourned early so that the
members of the club could travel to Lion Bill's house
where he was honored by receiving a Life Membership in
Lions International. Blind most of his adult life,
Bill joined our club in 1973, but he was a member of
three other clubs before then joining the Glade Valley
Lions Club in 1953. When the Methodist Church
transferred him to a town where no club existed, he
helped form a new club and was the Charter President.
Recent
illness has kept Lion Bill away from our meetings, but we look
forward to his return in the future when his health improves.
Congratulations, Bill; you are an inspiration to all who know
you. |

Lion John Thompson
Receives Plaque of Appreciation |
|
Lion John
Thompson stepped down from his role as Secretary of the
Libertytown Unionville Lions Club after 13 years. He had
served from 1994 to 1997 and had a perfect record receiving the
100% Secretary each of those years. As a token of
appreciation, the President of the Club, Lion Gary Mullins
presented Lion John with a plaque which was engraved "Presented

his 25 years of service to our club and Lionism.
Lion Tim joined the club in 1974 but took an approved

Frank Fogle Receives 50 Year Chevron
Shown on the right is Frank Fogle just after he
was presented a 50 year chevron and certificate
by Lion Gary Mullins, President of the
Libertytown-Unionville Lions Club.
Lion Frank was sponsored by Lion Ray Covey, and
was inducted into the Club in January, 1957.
He has served as Vice President, Director, Tail
Twister and was President in 1960 and 1985.
He has served on many committees, notably the
Health Services Committee, Pizza Sales, Greeter
and distribution of Poinsettias. He was
the anchor for the Club's entry into the Lions
Bowling League for many, many years.
He is the recipient of the Melvin Jones award,
the highest awarded by Lions Club International.
In
recent years, health concerns of his wife,
Frances, and himself have not allowed regular
attendance at meetings. We are happy
to note that Frank has been able to attend the
past two meetings; we trust this points to good
health for both Frank and Frances.
|
All
of your fellow Lions congratulate you,
Frank, for all of your accomplishments
over the past 50 years as an important
member of the Libertytown-Unionville
Lions Club. |
