During the fall and winter months of 1948, an alert and
enterprising civic-minded citizen, Robert Diller, realized the
need of a service club in our community and proceeded to arouse
the interest of other successful business men in the Libertytown
and Unionville area.
After several meetings, this small group of men decided to
organize the Libertytown-Unionville Lions Club. On June 7, 1949,
in St. Peter’s Catholic Church Hall, the Libertytown-Unionville
Club was chartered with 26 charter members. The club was
sponsored by the Union Bridge Lions Club with President Russell
Marsh, the Union Bridge members and District Governor Fishpaw in
attendance.
Over
the years we have remained close to our Sponsoring
Club, having a joint meeting at least once a year.
The first President
elected that evening was the late Fred Ward, and Richard Sappington took
the position of Secretary; Harold Wright was Treasurer, and Harry
Frushour was First Vice-President.
One of our members,
the late Charles I. "Doc" Joy distinguished himself and the club by
being elected District Governor of 22-W for the year 1963-64.
